This weekend, the City Room Blog of the New York Times posted “A Valentine’s Sampler as Famous New Yorkers Kiss and Tell.” The article included a collection of love letters to, or by, famous New Yorkers including Mark Twain, Katharine Hepburn, and E.E. Cummings.

“I am grateful – gratefuler than ever before – that you were born and that your love is mine and our two lives woven and welded together!” — Mark Twain, to his wife Olivia.
These heartfelt poems, letters, and drawings give us an intimate peek into the way these individuals expressed their love in the medium they were most comfortable with. What I love most about these words and drawings is that they show just how universal love is and how important it is to communicate your feelings with one another. Who wouldn’t swoon at receiving one of these notes?

– E. E. Cummings; The elephant was a frequent motif for Cummings in his drawings.
When was the last time you wrote/received a love letter and how did it make you feel? Try writing/drawing one today — it doesn’t have to be fancy…it can be as simple as a few lines or a sweet sketch. Be creative!
