I think the last time my husband and I celebrated Valentine’s day was in the year 2000. After our first year together, we somehow knew we would be in the relationship for the long haul. So we decided that we would only celebrate our year anniversaries. I always secretly wished for a proposal sometime around Vday but I knew it wouldn’t happen quite as I imagined.
One year on valentine’s day, I was working at the bank and throughout the day, my tellers were getting bouquets of roses. One girl even got the Asian bouquets where each rose was wrapped in tulle and some extra bunches of tulle were stuffed in the whole thing. That bouquet ended up being about 2 feet in diameter! Boy was I envious… My husband isn’t the romantic type. He’s the typical guy that doesn’t really take hints well. If I wanted something, I would have to tell him straight to his face. I knew for sure I wouldn’t be getting one of those gigantic bouquets from him. About 4 hours into my shift, I decided to call him. “All the girls here are getting roses!!” I complained. “I don’t even care if it’s not roses. Some type of flower would be nice…” After a quick conversation, I came to terms with the fact that he wasn’t bringing me flowers. On I went with my daily duties.
An hour or so passed by and in walks my man… armed with a dozen red roses. He walked up to my station and told me that he had already been planning to get me flowers before I complained about not getting any. I had no idea he what he planned and I felt so bad for giving him grief!! At that point, I couldn’t hold it in any longer, I just started balling.
Knowing that he’s not the romantic type, I really shouldn’t expect him to be the knight in shining armor. And why do we have to wait till Vday to celebrate our love? It’s the little things he does for me that reminds me each day that he loves me. I don’t ever expect a grand gesture from him once a year. But believe me, when he does things unexpectedly, I seriously cry like a baby… happy tears of course.
So if you’re celebrating Vday this year, I challenge you to do something special for your lover at least once a day for the next 365 days. It could be as simple as leaving a love note in their suit pocket or a sweet text. And if you’re willing, please do share!
Happy Valentine’s!!
