With degrees in Communications and Interior Design, Karena Higgins is an entrepreneur who creates with a distinct style. In 2008, she revitalized a failing restaurant into Eagle Rock’s beloved Butter Tart Cafe. Butter Tart offered fresh baked goods and unique items that were nods to her Filipina-Candian roots i.e. spam sliders, coconut cupcakes and empanadas. From menu and retail design, to the kitchen equipment layout, Karena planned and executed  the entire project. Butter Tart was featured on ABC’s Weekend Edition, Kababayan 18 and the LA Weekly.

In 2010, she launched “Pig Parts & Beer,” a successful blog highlighting Filipino food culture. In 2011, she collaborated with food writer Abby Abanes, to create“The Pleasure of Pig Parts & Beer”, the first, ever, Filipino food and beer pairing/tasting.The event was a culinary success and the site continues to grow.  Her latest venture, Nifty Gifty, is yet another example of her talent to integrate business with culture. Researching cake toppers for her cousins upcoming nuptials, Karena was disappointed in most of what she found. She continued to look for keepsakes that blended the familiar traditions with modernity and found nothing. She decided to develop the idea herself and in 2012 introduced Nifty Gifty, Gifts of Goodness.
