What happens when you mix burlap and lace? A rustic and romantic vintage wedding. Emily of Fresh Ivey Photography shared with us this beautiful wedding made with so many homemade details: The wedding gown was handmade by the bride’s mother, decorative lace and twine balls were provided by friends of the bride, and all the desserts were cooked by the neighborhood church friends. Burlap and lace were the predominant materials here, but combined with furs and intricate details, these humble materials ended up looking classy and vintage.
On November 19, 2011 I married my best friend of 14 years! Our families have been friends for many years, and Isaac and I started our friendship when I was in junior high. Though there were always some feelings there, we began seriously dating a few years after graduating from college. Very quickly I realized that my best friend was also the love of my life.
The most special DIY detail was my wedding dress handmade by my mother. A seamstress by trade, my mom made all of our dresses for prom and other significant events in our lives, so from a young age I always knew that I wanted her to make my wedding dress. The whole process of designing the dress with her, going to the fabric stores to choose the perfect fabric, and every custom fitting, was a wonderful, sweet, and emotional experience. And the dress turned out exactly as I dreamed! The morning of the wedding I got ready in my parent’s bedroom, a Spanish tradition, surrounded by my sisters, mom and close friends. That is a memory I will always cherish.
We live in California now, but we both grew up on the East coast and got married in Philadelphia in the fall, my favorite season of the year. It was a wonderful crisp fall day with just enough vibrant leaves left on the trees to provide a beautiful backdrop to our day. It provided just the right compliment to our burlap and lace, rustic and romantic, theme. I am the youngest of seven siblings, and the last girl in my family to get married. The wedding was so special to me because my sisters, mom, and friends came together to make this a DIY wedding in every sense of the phrase. Luckily, I have very creative friends and sisters, and they basically made everything by hand, from the letterpress invitations hand pressed by my sister-in-law, to the gorgeous lace balls hanging from the ceiling, to the amazingly delicious desserts at our dessert table. It was a real labor of love and everything turned out beautifully! We were married at the church I grew up in and the reception was on the lawn where I played countless times as a child. It was sweet, intimate, romantic, and very special to our hearts.
After months of planning, our actual wedding day went by in a flash! But being surrounded by our family and friends at the wedding that they put together for us, is something that Isaac and I will always remember. And thanks to our awesome photographer, we have amazing photos to last a lifetime!
