Weddings are on everyone’s mind at the moment thanks to the nuptials of Kate Middleton and Prince William. But even if you are not about to get married in the centre of the world stage, there is still plenty to think about. Are you in need of a little help to calm your nerves?
Although you’ve heard it many times, preparation is the key. There are so many things to remember for the big day that it is much easier to keep on top of what needs to be done if you create a checklist and tick items off as they are dealt with.
It’s worth thinking about all the main things first – booking the church or other venue and the after-party booking. Once you have set the date, you can begin to ‘work backwards’ to figure out a timetable to fit in all the other details. How long will it take for the wedding dress to be prepared, for example? When do you want the invitations to be sent out?
A handy tip is to take a deep breath and visualize all the things you want to happen on your special day. It’s often good to consider each topic in turn. For instance, what about the arrangements for the flowers? When will the florist bring the flowers? Does the church need to be dressed the day before? Who will make sure the button-holes are delivered to the right people?
Make a note of the main subjects, including:
(a) Guests – who to invite, when to invite, what information to include in the invitation, seating arrangements for the ceremony, reception and the wedding breakfast, wedding favours to be provided;
(b) The wedding party – who will they be and what are their particular duties, their gifts;
(c) Dresses – for the bride, the wedding party, accessories, dress code for guests;
(d) The wedding service – hymns, readings, speeches;
(e) Party decorations – flowers in the church, table settings, table decorations, table sparklers;
(f) Records of the day – photographer, videographer, wedding guest books; and so on.
The more you get a handle on the main parts of the wedding, the more you will have the time to get to the finer details. Ironically, it is often these finer details that make the wedding particularly memorable. For example, consider the party decorations around the venue. Will the color of the party decorations match the bridesmaid’s outfits? Or will the wedding favours coordinate with the wedding theme? This is another reason for keeping a handle on other records of the day such as wedding guestbooks as a keepsake of personal comments and congratulations from guests.
Of course, another way to reduce wedding panic is to delegate to professionals. If your budget does not allow for a wedding planner, you will still find it a relief to know that, for example, the photographer is a professional and once he or she is booked, they will take over the responsibility for the photos from then on. Or that the party decorations, wedding favours and wedding guest books will be taken care of by the Chief Bride’s Maid.
The biggest reward to all this preparation is that it will help you relax on the big day itself. Whether you are a nobility or not, your special day will still be one to remember with very fond memories.
